It's not Anwar Ibrahim in sex tape: Wan Azizah

KUALA LUMPUR, April 5 (Bernama) -- Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail defended her husband Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, saying Anwar Ibrahim was not the man featured in the sex video implicating a senior opposition leader.

Wan Azizah, who is Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, said after watching the video clip on the Internet, she and her family were convinced that the man in the video was not Anwar Ibrahim.

"My family and I have watched the video that was published in a website. We decided to watch it after we were told that there were no obscene scenes in the video clip.
"Only we know Anwar Ibrahim intimately and it is clear that the actor in the video is not Anwar Ibrahim based on the man's physique which is different (from that of Anwar Ibrahim's)," she told a news conference at her house in Segambut, here Tuesday.

The one-minute-47-second black and white video clip was uploaded on YouTube yesterday showing a man and a women in their towels.

Present at the news conference were PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah Anwar, Anwar's father Datuk Ibrahim Abdul Rahman, DAP chairman Karpal Singh and Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.

Wan Azizah said Anwar Ibrahim was currently in Sarawak for the state election.

She also said that although the police had confirmed that the sex video was genuine, it did not prove that her husband was the actor in the video.

"Genuine or not, that is not the issue. It's not Anwar Ibrahim in the video and there was also a Thai language sentence in the video," she said.

She said it was impossible for the man in the video to be her husband because since a year ago, their children had been accompanying him wherever he went, including during physiotherapy sessions for his back pain.

"All the allegations hurled against Anwar Ibrahim are absurd. How is it possible for him to do all these things which seem to contradict one another," she said.

When asked on Anwar Ibrahim's Omega wristwatch, Wan Azizah said it was in her safekeeping.

Anwar Ibrahim told online news portal Malaysiakini that he was not the man in the video.

"Now, the video has been distributed. And whether the person looks like me or not, I don't care. It wasn't me," he was quoted as saying by the website.

Anwar Ibrahim's wife Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, accompanied by the couple's children, told reporters Tuesday that the family had viewed the video clip and that it was not Anwar Ibrahim on the tape.

"We as a family decided to watch the video posted on the Internet, and it is clear that the body and physique of the actor in the video is extremely different from the body and physique of Anwar Ibrahim Ibrahim," she said.

"(Whether the video is) authentic or not, that is not the issue. The point is that it is not Anwar Ibrahim in the video," she added.

Anwar Ibrahim, who was sacked as deputy premier and jailed in 1998 on sodomy and corruption charges widely seen as politically motivated, said the tape was another "dirty and obscene" attempt to end his career.
The latest allegations emerged as Anwar Ibrahim undergoes a second trial for sodomy, after a 25-year-old male former aide accused the 63-year-old father-of-six of sodomising him at an upmarket Kuala Lumpur condominium in 2008.
