Casey Abrams, voted off "American Idol" Thursday by America, was reeled back on board by judges Steven Tyler, Jennifer Lopez and Randy Jackson, who showered him with every welcome short of the fatted calf.
After host Ryan Seacrest told him he was voted off, Abrams was given the same chance as all other jettisoned contestants to sing a minute or so of a final song.
That's the "Idol" equivalent of the condemned prisoner getting to choose a last meal, and it usually has about the same impact on the outcome.
Abrams only got a couple of lines into "I Don't Need No Doctor," though, when Jackson started waving his arms in a gesture that clearly said, dawg, don't bother.
"Stop, we know who you are," said Jackson, and seconds later Tyler said that voting him off the show was "crazy wrong."
All three judges, said Tyler, agreed Abrams should stay. Kick save and a beauty.
This sent the crowd into a frenzy, chanting, "Ca-sey! Ca-sey!" Abrams himself, as he seemed to suddenly realize he won't be watching next week's show on television, started yelling "I can't believe it!" He bounded down to thank the judges for using their one precious save on li'l ol' him and raced a few rows further to hug his mom.
If this is how he reacts to making the top 11, let's only imagine what would happen if he won.
The dramatic save did momentarily threaten to torpedo one of the running motifs of the show – which is that last night's elimination was particularly critical because this summer's "American Idol" tour would only include the top 10.

Seacrest saved the moment again, though, by saying that "Idol" had already prepared contingency plans for just this kind of 11th-man save and so this summer the tour will include the top 11.

This late flurry of drama topped off a results show that every week seems to inch closer to vaudeville, hauling into every kind of act this side of a peg-leg tap dancer.
"Idol" alum Jennifer Hudson returned to plug her new song, Stevie Wonder dropped by to sing "Happy Birthday" to Tyler and someone decided the perfect guest artist to cap off Motown week would be the country band Sugarland.
Oh, and then wrestler Hulk Hogan came out, told two contestants they were safe, and gave Seacrest a good old-fashioned pro wrestling punch to the jaw, which sent Seacrest tumbling into a good old-fashioned pro wrestling fall.
