2 Web Browser Extensions That Give You Greater Control Over New Facebook Design

Given the raft of updates Facebook has rolled out over the last week or so — from the Subscribe button to the new-look News Feed — you’d be forgiven for thinking that many users are completely happy with the changes. In fact, some are furious. However, all is not lost. Not only can you remove the new ticker, but you can completely transform your Facebook experience through 2 different Web browser extensions.
Better Facebook — which is available for Google ChromeFirefox,Safari and Opera — lets you use tabbed News Feeds, mark posts as “read” and hide them, turn off the chat sidebar, add a theme, kill the photo lightbox viewer and much more. Other features include advanced feed filters, the option to remove recent activity from your profile and the ability to enlarge photos when you hover over the thumbnail.
Another extension, F.B. Purity (or Fluff Busting Purity, to give its full name), helps you get rid of notification spam (goodbye, unwanted app notifications!), decide what you want to appear on the right-hand column of your Facebook homepage, change the font size and more. Additionally, you can hide many Facebook features you might not want to see, such as the ticker, Likes and comments in your top news and questions (a feature Facebook overhauled in March). F.B. Purity is available for Chrome, Firefox, Safari and Opera.
It’s worth noting that these extensions have been around for a while but the latest versions of them let you take control over the latest features Facebook has rolled out. Indeed, a note on the Better Facebook website says that only the latest version of the extension will work following the News Feed changes that were rolled out Tuesday.
Having played around a little with each of these extensions, they make Facebook a little easier to use by hiding features I’m not really interested in to make my experience on the social network more straightforward and cleaner. They’re well worth checking out if you’re not happy with the latest Facebook changes.
Have you found any other browser extensions that help you use Facebook the way you want to use it?
