f8 is happening today and many rumours have been doing the rounds about what will be announced.
Over the 10 days alone, Facebook has made several additions andtweaks to the site in the run up to the event. Here's some of what to expect:
Music
Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook’s founder and chief executive, is expected to announce a new digital music sharing features, in partnership with the likes of Spotify, Mog and Deezer.
Users will be able to share songs they are listening to with friends. Then those friends will then be able to listen to the songs at the source of the music – for instance, Deezer. If a user is not signed up to any of Facebook’s partner digital music services, the social network will prompt the user to pick which site they wish to join. Once using a music service, users can sync their activity with Facebook, so that their music habits are published on Facebook.
Daniel Ek, Spotify’s chief executive is a confirmed guest at the event taking place in Palo Alto at the company’s headquarters.
Twitter integration
Last week Facebook launched a new subscribe button, in a bid to add a Twitter-like element to its service, allowing people to see public updates from users they are not ‘friends’ with on the site.
However, in this next step, all users of Facebook will be able to update their Twitter account directly from Facebook. Up until now, this type of functionality was available but only via Facebook fan pages.
Media
Facebook is believed to have signed some new partnership with the likes of newspapers and video sites, such as Hulu, to make it easier to access content directly within Facebook. For instance, as VentureBeat reported, publications like The Wall Street Journal, have agreed to enable its content to be accessed directly within Facebook.com, in exchange for an advertising revenue share.
Games
An update to the gaming platform is expected as top Zynga executive Owen Van Natta and Playfish’s co-founder Kristian Segerstrale are also confirmed speakers at f8.
