I am quite sure that you would rather win the lottery than to get struck by lightning, right? Of course you would! But, people say that you are more likely to be struck by lightning. Are they right? Is this true or false?
I have the answer for you. But first, I want you to consider a few things. A lot of people win the lottery every year. A study from a few years ago showed that 1136 people in North America won at least $1 million in the lottery in 1996. Today, that number is closer to 2000. That means that hundreds of people win the lottery every month.
Now, ask yourself this - Do you think that hundreds of people get struck by lightning every month? I will give you the answer shortly.
Before I give you the answer, I want to ask you another question - What do you consider winning the lottery to entail? Does it mean winning at least a million dollars? Maybe you would consider winning $100,000 to be a lottery win too. If you look at how many people win at least $100,000 in a year, that number would be closer to 10,000, I would guess.
If 10,000 people win at least $100,000 in the lotto every year, that would mean that more than 800 people win the lottery each and every month.
Do you think that 800 people get struck by lightning every month?
OK, so here is the answer - On average, less than 100 people in North America are hit by lightning every year. The same study that looked at lottery winners in 1996 also looked at how many people were hit by lightning in that same year and it found that just 91 people did.
So the answer to the original question is not true, as many people tend to believe - It is FALSE!
If that kept you up all night, worrying, you can now stop worrying and sleep soundly. You can rest easy now, knowing that you are actually about 12.5 times more likely to win a million dollars (And even more if you consider a $100,000 win to be a lottery win) than you are to experience 30,000 amps of atmospheric electrostatic discharge.
See, so you do not really have that much to worry about. Does that make you feel better now?
More people win the lottery than you think. If you don't believe me, check out the lottery winner blog, where you could read about hundreds of big jackpot winners.
