2011 Road Worlds Junior Women’s Road Race – Garner Wins Gold

September 23, 2011 (Copenhagen, Denmark) – Lucy Garner (Great Britain), a first year junior, has claimed the gold in the Junior Women’s 70km (5 x 14km) road race on the final sprint as launched her attack to win by several bike lengths. Jessy Druyets (Belgium) took home the silver and Christina Siggaard (Denmark) grabbed the bronze. The top Canadian was Gabrielle Pilote-Fortin (Neuville QC) in 19th.
A dangerous break of two riders got away near the end of the penultimate lap with Italy’s Rosella Ratto, the current road race and ITT European champ, gaining a 20s lead. She was joined by Mika Kroger (Germany) and the two looked like they would stay away. But the pack finally caught them with less than a km to go setting up for the sprinters. Garner timed her sprint perfectly taking the outside lane and passed everyone to take home the biggest win of her career.
Unofficial
1. Lucy Garner (Great Britain) 1:46:17
2. Jessy Druyets (Belgium)
3. Christina Siggaard (Denmark)
19. Gabrielle Pilote-Fortin (Canada)
